Freedom

First of all, congratulations for recognising a money emotion that strikes a chord with you. Take a look at these statements to see some of the thoughts or feelings that can often show up with this emotion:

  • 'Money gives me choices I wouldn't otherwise have'
  • 'Financial independence means I can live life on my own terms'
  • 'Having money lets me say yes to opportunities or no to things that don't serve me'
  • 'I feel lighter knowing I'm not trapped by my financial situation'

These prompts are designed to help you start conversations about money emotions that matter, with clarity, honesty, and without shame. It’s worth noting that these prompts are just to help you get started, and there may be other points that you want to ask and raise – this is up to you, and whatever you feel comfortable sharing.

You can use them in conversations with a partner or loved ones, or simply as journal prompts for personal reflection.

In conversation with a partner or loved one:

  • 'Financial freedom is really important to me, it means I have choices. Can we talk about what freedom means to you?'
  • 'I need some financial independence within our relationship to feel free. Can we talk about what that looks like?'
  • 'I want us both to feel free in how we use money. How do we create space for individual choice while managing shared goals?'
  • 'Freedom means being able to say yes or no without financial pressure. Can we build our finances to support that?'
  • 'I want retirement to feel like freedom, not just 'not working.' What does that actually look like for me, and how do I plan for it?'

Solo reflection:

  • 'What does financial freedom mean to me specifically?'
  • 'What would I do if I had complete financial freedom tomorrow?'
  • 'Am I working towards freedom, or away from something else?'
  • 'What's one decision I could make today that would bring me 5% more freedom?'
  • 'What's the difference between freedom and escape, and which am I really seeking?'
