From The Donald to Brangelina – 6 Life Events We Never Saw ComingAegon Content Team 2 December 2016 Back to results
We can't stop life from throwing us a curveball every now and then, some of them we might even see coming. However, no matter how thoroughly we plan ahead and how much thought we put into the course of our life, there are some events in life that no-one could have predicted and shock us to our core.
These are some of those events.
1. Brangelina break-up
After 12 years together, six children and numerous Hollywood successes, the notorious duo have officially ‘uncoupled’. From Hollywood superstar to human rights campaigner, Angelina has called it quits with Mr. Pitt. With properties in France, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York and Santa Barbara, the Jolie-Pitt divorce settlement might take some time. (Let’s just hope it doesn’t last longer than their two-year marriage.)
2. Donald Trump running for president
Well, it’s official. The 45th President of the United States of America is Donald Trump. While we’ll leave the political opinion pieces to someone else, Trump has surprised us all. Love him or hate him, billionaire playboy turned president was a surprising (if not unprecedented) move for Trump.
3. Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary
2016 has proved a big year for the United Kingdom, and, once again, bike riding Boris has featured heavily. With a shock appointment as Foreign Secretary, the world met the news of his appointment with a combination of outrage, disbelief, and bewilderment.
4. Plan (and volunteer) for human head transplant
If you haven't heard about this, you better start reading.Terminally ill Russian, Valery Spiridonov, has volunteered himself for a revolutionary life-saving operation. The procedure is set to be carried out in China by neurosurgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero. Canavero feels confident of his patient’s chance of survival.
5. Leicester winning Premier League
For some, the greatest sporting story of all time, for others, a missed opportunity. Starting the season at 5000-1, Leicester went on to captivate Britain and be part of one of the great sporting surprises of all time. The question is, were you lucky enough to have Leicester City F.C in your work sweepstake?
6. Ruby Tandoh shaves her head just one year after GBBO fame
Let’s face it, the Great British Bake Off has, over the years, delivered some shockers. From GBBO fame in 2013, to recent attention-grabbing, Ruby is high up on the list.
The 2013 runner up released an image of herself recently, head clean shaven and curly locks nowhere to be seen. Reminiscent of a similar shocker, (namely, Britney), we hope Ruby isn’t headed down the same (temporary) path.
7. GBBO move from BBC to Channel 4
Sticking with the bake off theme, baking fans across the UK were shocked to learn that the much-loved Great British Bake Off is moving to Channel 4. With Mel, Sue and Mary quitting the show, blue-eyed Paul will be the only original to move over to Channel 4, who bought the rights in a three-year deal worth a reported £75 million.
8. Pete Townshend veers into the literary world
After a 1982 tour, Pete Townshend sent shockwaves through musical fans announcing the break-up of The Who. Three years later, Pete took a real-life day job - as a book editor at Faber and Faber. (Much to the delight of his fans, the job only lasted three years, and he soon reformed the band and took to the road.)
9. The ban on playing conkers in school
While it was indeed a myth in the early 2000’s that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had banned conker fights, it was certainly not an error that schools in Wiltshire, Cumbria and Clackmannanshire introduced a ban on conkers.
In a similar vein, the game British Bulldog is banned in almost a third of schools in England, while a school in Leeds has banished tig from the playground. Is everybody going conkers?
10. The fad of Pokémon Go
Just a matter of months ago, you couldn’t walk down a street without passing an avid Pokémon Go-er. Now? It’s like it never happened. Well, almost. The augmented-reality launched in early July with well over 160 million downloads globally. Were you a Pokémon hunter or did you find yourself in disbelief at the gaming sensation? Either way, it’s fair to say, we never saw it coming.
Life’s little surprises
While these events might be taking the example to the extreme, they do go to show that life’s surprising turn of events really can affect anyone.
What surprises does your life have in store for you? Whether positive or negative, the key is to be prepared. If you think that ‘it can only happen to other people’, it might be time to re-evaluate.
