10 September 2007
  • Feilim Mackle to lead AEGON’s growing retail product business
  • Steve Clode, former Nationwide marketing chief, appointed to new role of Director of Marketing and Customer Strategy
  • Thoresen: new talent will build future success

AEGON is strengthening its executive team with two new appointments from outside the organisation.

Feilim Mackle becomes Director of AEGON Individual Business.

Mackle was previously managing director of Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) Retail Banking division. He joins AEGON with responsibility for leading the company’s fast growing retail life and pensions business, covering key product areas such as personal pensions, SIPPs, individual protection and at-retirement solutions including its annuities business and AEGON’s 5 for Life product.

This area of AEGON’s life and pensions business has grown significantly in recent years and in the first half of 2007 accounted for 62% of its overall new life and pensions business – having increased from 54% in first half 2006. In the first half of 2007, new business for AEGON’s individual business increased by 39% compared with 2006.

AEGON seeks to increase its share of the UK life and pensions market to 10% by 2010.

The role was previously held by Peter Dornan, who having achieved significant new business growth now moves to a new role of Director of Partnership and Distribution Development, responsible for developing and maintaining AEGON’s relationships with distribution partners such as Barclays, and affinity group marketing.

AEGON also announces the creation of a new executive level role, Director of Marketing and Customer Strategy, and the appointment of Steve Clode.

Clode was previously Marketing Director at Nationwide Building Society, where he was responsible for developing the Nationwide brand, including its “Proud to be Different” positioning, and its marketing and sponsorship strategy, including developing the opportunity derived from its England football team sponsorship.

At AEGON he will be responsible for brand development and marketing, including sponsorship strategy. He will work across all AEGON’s businesses to develop a more unified approach to the group’s position in the market.

AEGON UK’s chief executive Otto Thoresen says,

“In the last two years, AEGON UK has increased its market share and improved its financial performance, achieving record levels of new business and profitability. But we are determined to develop the business further still. These new appointments add fresh talent and will help us achieve future success.

“Feilim has a reputation as a high achiever and his experience in building strength and scale in the life and pensions market, combined with the retail market understanding he gained at RBS will be of immense value to AEGON.

“Steve has played a pivotal role in transforming the Nationwide brand, and importantly, changing the way customers now view that organisation. AEGON is a leading player in the long-term savings market, and our challenge is to develop our brand for the future, and improve the way we present our organisation to customers. Steve has much to contribute to this.

“I am delighted that two such high-calibre executives are joining AEGON and I look forward to working with them as we move forward with our plans for the UK market.”

Both Feilim Mackle and Steve Clode will take up their positions later this month.
