Telephone interview

We ask every successful applicant to take a phone interview, so you’ll be contacted by Resource Solutions, our recruitment partner, to complete this. Alternatively, depending on the role, you may be contacted by an AEGON Resourcing Consultant.

It’s all pretty straightforward, really. During the actual interview we’ll ask you for biographical details such as your current salary, notice period, when you could start work and what you did in any previous jobs. We’ll also ask you some competency-based questions (see below - Competency-based interview) to explore how you’ve handled certain situations in the workplace.

It’s also a great opportunity for us to tell you more about the job itself, what tasks you’d be doing, the benefits we provide and the company itself. And remember, we’re always there to answer any questions you may have about us or the job you’re applying for.

Aptitude testing

These tests are designed to assess your suitability for the job you’ve applied for. There are various tests that we may use, depending on the job, looking at things like numerical reasoning, clerical checking and communication skills.

Telephone role play

If you’re applying for a Customer Service Representative role in our Contact Centre then we’ll ask you to take part in a telephone role play. The role play simulates a telephone call similar to those you’d receive at work. This means we can evaluate how you relate to customers, and assess your fact-finding, communication, reliability and problem-solving skills.

Competency-based interview

All candidates take part in a competency-based interview. This style of interviewing assesses skills, knowledge, behaviour and attributes. We’ll ask you several competency questions relating to the job you’re applying for. Each question looks for specific examples of how you have behaved in different situations in the past.

This type of interview also ensures that we ask all candidates the same questions; the interviews are all structured the same way, which ensures we treat all candidates fairly.

You’ll be expected to give recent examples of things you’ve done, not your team mates. So think of a range of different examples that you could tell us about in the interview. A typical question we may ask you is, ‘Could you tell us about a time you resolved a customer complaint?’. Your answer would help us measure your customer focus.

It’s important that you present yourself in a professional manner. Be enthusiastic about the job you’re applying for. Just be yourself at the interview and try to relax, as this always comes across well.

At the end of the competency questions, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions about the job, the benefits or the company. Remember that the interview is a good time for you to find out more about us too!

Presentations

If the job you’re applying for needs you to make presentations to people, we may ask you to make a presentation, on an agreed subject, to one or more people.
