History

How we've grown and diversified

Although AEGON UK was established as recently as 1999, the history of our businesses goes back over 175 years.

Timeline

1831 Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Society was created in Edinburgh to help people manage their finances – one of a number of mutual societies set up in Edinburgh around that time.

1994 Creation of Scottish Equitable plc on 1 January, with an initial AEGON Group stake of 40% – and one of the first demutualisations of a mutual life operation.

1995 Scottish Equitable International launched in Luxembourg.

1999 AEGON UK was set up as a holding company for Scottish Equitable and AEGON’s other UK businesses. We acquired Guardian Life & Pensions.

2000 We acquired HS Administrative Services.

2001 Scottish Equitable Asset Management became AEGON Asset Management UK. We expanded to include individual protection products.

2002 We formed AEGON UK Distribution Holdings by investing in a number of distribution companies. Scottish Equitable International opens a new base in Dublin.

2004 We brought five financial adviser firms together to form the Origen brand.

2005 We split our life and pensions business to create AEGON for Individuals and AEGON for Corporates, to better respond to differing needs in our two core markets.

2006 We refreshed our brand strategy by linking AEGON’s name to our established brands, with a vibrant new look and style of communication. And we explored new ways to distribute our products, for example, through banks.

2007 Another record year of business performance demonstrates the success of our product and channel diversification strategy.
